Find out how debt affects older adults, including new developments during the COVID-19 pandemic. Discover how older adults experience debt problems through the lens of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB)’s complaint system, and how complaints inform our work.  In this session, you will learn about important new rights under the CFPB’s recent debt collection rule. Your older clients may need extra support when dealing with financial service providers such as lenders, loan servicers, and debt collectors. Learn how you can use CFPB’s tools to help your clients understand and exercise their rights.  Finally, we will hear from your front-line experiences in helping older adults manage debt.

As an Older Americans Policy Analyst at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, Beverly specializes in debt collection, helping older adults make critical financial decisions after the death of a spouse, and financing long-term services and supports. Beverly spent seven years practicing consumer and housing law as a legal aid attorney before joining the Bureau in 2013. She received a J.D. from Washington University School of Law and a B.A. from the State University of New York.

Brandy Bauer (Moderator)

Brandy Bauer is Director of the Center for Benefits Access at the National Council on Aging, where she works with community organizations and state agencies across the country to promote benefits for older adults, identify strategies to improve the financial security of vulnerable seniors, and educate consumers about scams targeting older adults. She has worked in the field of aging for 11 years. Prior to that, she spent a decade in the international health and human service sectors, working on improving access to services for vulnerable and marginalized populations, including refugee and war trauma survivors in Europe, and as a humanitarian aid worker in Afghanistan.
