This presentation will help families, caregivers, and providers better identify the specific challenges that seniors face as they age. These include the potential of cognitive impairment, the dangers presented by physical decline and mobility issues, and the financial realities of securing appropriate care. The main goal of the presentation is to educate the audience on important financial planning tools such as a power of attorney, advanced healthcare directives, geriatric care management, and long-term care insurance. The presentation also addresses the wide range of care options available to seniors, from adult daycare to home healthcare, to continuing care facilities.
At the end of this session, participants will be able to:
- Demonstrate a deeper understanding of the primary challenges that families face as we age. Cognitive, Physical, and financial risks
- Develop a clear plan to minimize the risks of aging that will include a power of attorney, advanced healthcare directives and long-term care insurance
- Improve retirement readiness by implementing a comprehensive plan that addresses these risks

Emily McDonald leads the programmatic content and customer service strategy and execution across NCOA’s economic security product portfolio. She has 10+ years of experience working in multi-community, rapid-cycle innovation programs for older adults. Prior to joining NCOA she worked at the Center for Social Development at Washington University. Emily received her degrees from Trinity University and the School of Social Work at Washington University in St. Louis.

Doug Ewing, JD, CFP®, RICP®, started his career with Nationwide® in 2019 with more than 16 years of industry experience. Doug serves the western region for the Nationwide Retirement Institute, educating financial professionals, clients, plan sponsors and plan participants on a variety of financial planning topics.
Prior to Nationwide, Doug worked in advanced consulting roles for both Transamerica and John Hancock. An accomplished public speaker with extensive main-stage, breakout and
national webinar presentation experience, Doug excels at simplifying complex retirement
issues, including Social Security, Medicare and retirement health care costs, tax-efficient
retirement income and wealth transfer strategies, as well as elder law and estate planning.
Doug was admitted to the Massachusetts bar in 1990. After a 13-year legal career, he got his start in the financial industry in 2003, working as a financial professional with Legg Mason and Merrill Lynch. He has earned both the CFP and RICP designations and is FINRA Series 7 and 66
licensed.
