Critical incidents in the workplace can affect people physically, psychologically, and emotionally as well as affect a program's stability. Although it is very difficult to prevent critical incidents, effective management of those incidents we can minimize the negative impact on the beneficiary, staff and agency. Are you prepared?
At the end of this session, participants will be able to:
- Provide attendees with policy, procedure, protocol, and documentation templates as the foundation for critical incident management.
- Explain the debriefing process and stress its importance in supporting staff.
- Outline the three key aspects of critical incident management; Training, Navigating the incident itself, and debriefing.
Brandy Bauer (Moderator)

Brandy Bauer is Director of the Center for Benefits Access at the National Council on Aging, where she works with community organizations and state agencies across the country to promote benefits for older adults, identify strategies to improve the financial security of vulnerable seniors, and educate consumers about scams targeting older adults. She has worked in the field of aging for 11 years. Prior to that, she spent a decade in the international health and human service sectors, working on improving access to services for vulnerable and marginalized populations, including refugee and war trauma survivors in Europe, and as a humanitarian aid worker in Afghanistan.
Dennis Smithe MA
Client Services Manager
SHIP TA Center (NEI3A)
Dennis Smithe joined NEI3A and the SHIP TA Center team February 7, 2017. He is the Client Service Manager and is responsible for ensuring a our communications with the public and others is professional. Dennis has a MA in Mental Health Counseling and over 30 year of experience most of which has been in Child Welfare. Dennis has a broad range of experiences ranging from direct client services to being a Director of Residential Services.
Dennis’ areas of specialty include Trauma Informed Care as well as using those concepts for developing effective supervisory relationships to reduce staff turnover. Dennis has been recognized as expert in behavior management techniques including physical interventions. Dennis is a certified Level 1 and Level 2 trauma trainer and has been a certified Mandt Trainer for close to 20 years.
