This session will cover how fall prevention programs can include older people with vision loss by offering best practices for working with older people with vision loss and discussing evidence-based strategies that have been developed for the Matter of Balance program and others. Additionally presenters will cover how to connect with community and state agencies which provide vision rehabilitation services.

Elizabeth Lee

Senior Director of Caregiver and Senior Services

VISIONS

Elizabeth Lee has been the Senior Director of Caregiver and Senior Services since 2011 at VISIONS Services for the Blind and Visually Impaired in NYC, a nonprofit rehabilitation and social service organization that provides free services to people of all ages who are blind or visually impaired. She oversees the Older Adult Center that provides services and programming such as health and wellness, arts and education to over 800 older adults. In addition, she manages the Caregiver Program which provides support such as counseling, training and respite to 750 unpaid caregivers. Ms Lee has a Masters in Social Work from Columbia University focusing on Program Development and Administration.

Kirsten Dorsey OTR/L

Kirsten is the Program Manager for MaineHealth’s A Matter of Balance: Managing Concerns about Falls. She joined MaineHealth in May 2020 – at the beginning of the pandemic. Her first project was creating the virtual translation of the MOB program which we will teach you during this training.Kirsten is an Occupational Therapist who has extensive experience working with older adults in a variety of residential & supported living settings. Many of her patients needed therapy as a result of having a fall.She is very grateful to be working to prevent falls for older adults after seeing so many lives interrupted with pain, suffering and loss of independence that a serious fall can cause.Kirsten lives in Maine with her husband, 3 daughters, 2 cats and an old dog.

Christy Ann Lau, MSSW

Christy Ann Lau, MSSW is the Senior Director of Partners in Care Foundation’s Community Wellness Department. She began her career at Partners in February 2016 and currently directs all grant activities related to the organization’s statewide Fall Prevention initiative funded by the Administration for Community Living, as well as the organization’s partnerships with the Beverly Hills Fire Department and Blue Marble Health Co. to decrease decrease falls among older adults by engaging them in community programs.  Christy also manages activities of the statewide California Healthier Living Coalition.  She holds a Master’s of Science in Social Work degree from Columbia University and is certified as a Lead Trainer for A Matter of Balance, and an Instructor for Tai Chi for Arthritis.

Melissa Donegan

Elder Services of the Merrimack Valley and North Shore

Melissa Donegan is the Assistant Director of the Healthy Living Center of Excellence (HLCE) at ElderServices of the Merrimack Valley, Inc. (ESMV). Melissa assists in the overall management anddissemination of healthy living evidence-based programs in clinical and community settings across thestate of Massachusetts. Melissa is responsible for managing aspects of multiple federal and privategrants and managing staff to ensure successful planning and implementation. Melissa develops anddirects initiatives related to building community partnerships and capacity and to engage others inpromoting self-management education programs. Melissa is also the National Director of the HealthyIDEAS Program. Melissa began her career at ESMV in 2004 and has been involved with evidence-basedprograms since 2011. Healthy living is a passion for Melissa both personally and professionally.

She has decades of experience covering health and public health as well as expertise in helping other tell their powerful personal stories. She is a National Center to Reframe Aging facilitator and would love to talk to you about changing the way we think about aging.

Pris Rogers

American Printing House for the Blind

Pris Rogers is the co-lead on VisionAware and a steering committee member of the National Aging and Vision Loss Coalition. She is also special advisor to the American Foundation for the Blind on aging and vision loss. She has her master's in gerontology and Ph.D. in aging and vision loss.
She is the former director of several agencies for the blind.  She also served as Bureau Chief of Client Services for the Florida Division of Blind Services and as Commissioner of the Department for the Blind in Kentucky. Pris has authored articles and books on vision and aging loss and spoken had national conferences over her over 40 years in the field.
