Every year NCOA’s National Institute of Senior Centers honors outstanding efforts made by senior centers across the nation to offer innovative, creative, and impactful programs for older adults. Each program is proof of the important work that happens at senior centers. And these programs serve as models for senior center staff across the country to implement in their communities. Nancy Z. Henkin, Ph.D

Senior Fellow

Generations United

Dr. Henkin, the founder and former Executive Director of the Intergenerational Center at Temple University, is currently serving as a Senior Fellow at Generations United. Dr. Henkin received her B.S. from Simmons College and her Ph.D. from Temple University. Over the past 40 years, she has developed a wide range of cross-age programs, provided consultation to local, national, and international organizations in the aging, youth, housing, and educational fields, and published numerous articles and program materials.   A leading authority in intergenerational practice, community building, and lifelong civic engagement/learning, Dr. Henkin is a frequent presenter at national and international conferences. Dr, Henkin serves on the International Journal on Intergenerational Relations editorial board. She is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Maggie Kuhn Award from the Gray Panthers (1988),  the Jack Ossofsky Award from the National Council on the Aging (2005),  the Eisner Prize for Intergenerational Excellence 2101 (on behalf of the  Intergenerational Center) , ARK Ageing Programme Fellowship (Queens University, Belfast, Ireland 2013), the Marjorie Cantor Leadership Award from Elders Share the Arts (2013) and the Intergenerational Champion Award from Generations United (2015).  In 2006, she was elected into the Ashoka Fellowship, a global community of social entrepreneurs, for her efforts to build Communities for All Ages.

Tina Doyle

Director

Berlin Senior Center

Tina Doyle has over 20 years of experience in senior centers and aging issues, serving as the Director of the Berlin Senior Center and the Municipal Agent for the Elderly in Berlin, CT. A certified CHOICES Counselor with the State of Connecticut Health Insurance Assistance Program, Tina is dedicated to empowering seniors through a variety of programs focused on health, education, and community engagement. Under her leadership, the Berlin Senior Center has grown its membership and built strong partnerships with local businesses, schools, and healthcare agencies.

In addition to her professional role, Tina is a lifelong volunteer, actively involved in her community through the RSVP Advisory Board, Berlin Friends of the Visiting Nurses, and the local Lions Club. She has also contributed to initiatives like the Berlin Children’s Fund and Berlin Upbeat, mentoring high school students in community outreach.

Tina is married to her high school sweetheart, Dan Doyle, and they have two grown daughters, Katie and Maggie. She is grateful for their support in her work and community efforts.

Fredda Johnson

Director of Engagement

Motion Picture & Television Fund

At 59 years-old, Fredda Johnson stepped into her “third act’ with the Motion Picture & Television Fund, bringing years of experience to drive social change through dynamic, purpose-driven intergenerational programs. As Director of Engagement, Fredda builds and strengthens relationships with non-profit and corporate partners, community members, and volunteers to collaboratively amplify MPTF’s mission and connect generations.  Her advocacy for older adults living and aging well prompted the creation of the award-winning mentorship program Passing The Torch, which is designed to make the film and television industry more inclusive and serve as a model for other industries. After careers in television development and theater production, this chapter is Fredda’s most fulfilling, proving that age only enhances our ability to make a difference.

Heather Marriott

Program Specialist, Center for Healthy Aging

National Council on Aging

Heather Marriott was brought on to NCOA as a Program Specialist managing the Vaccine Uptake Initiative and supporting the NISC Affiliate Network expansion. She is a community engagement professional with a passion for income equality and health equity! She comes to NCOA from a small local nonprofit in Missouri, where she worked as a Community Engagement Director.
